Diary 6.9.11
A later start today, arrived at The Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth in good time to see my patients.
3 laser cases, a turbinoplasty and septoplasty, using the Holmium YAG laser, for nose blockage. Quite a difficult one, the nose clearly had quite a lot of trauma in the past. It reminded me of the noses I’ve treated on Saracens rugby players, as their ENT surgeon.
Then a Carbon Dioxide laser case for recurrent tonsillitis, patient was a bit nervous as it was under local anaesthetic, but she did really well in the end. Finally a Carbon Dioxide laser case for nose blockage due to an adhesion, which is a complication of previous surgery (not mine!). Also under local anaesthetic, this time with 10% Cocaine solution. The nurses were quite surprised to see that the laser time was exactly 10 seconds!!
Off to clinic for the afternoon, after all the paperwork was finished.15 patients, a couple of cancer patients, one needs a small repeat operation to laser possible recurrence of voice box cancer, the other doing well after a Commando procedure for throat cancer. Then a series of patients with nose/catarrhal problems, some tonsil patients, a patient with suspected throat cancer (very nervous), and a patient with very unusual throat pain, that I couldnt help her with.
Finally, do my letters and off home on the tube.
