This is a relatively new technique, and replaces traditional turbinectomy. These techniques are performed to improve air flow throughout the nose, by widening the narrowest point, called the nasal valve. This sits near the front of the nose, and is formed by the nasal septum (which often has to be corrected as well) and inferior turbinate, a bone which sits deep inside the nostril.
Laser turbinoplasty employs bone-cutting lasers (Holmium YAG or Carbon Dioxide) to cut into the deep mucosa (lining) over the bone, then the laser is used to remove some of the bone, just enough to significantly widen the nasal valve once healed, but not too much that complications of turbinectomy occur, such as empty nose syndrome, severe bleeding or atrophic rhinitis.
The technique is usually performed under a short general anaesthetic, both sides at the same time. Healing and return to full and much improved nasal function takes around 1 week. Return to work around 48 hours post op.
The Consultants at The London Laser Clinic have successfully performed laser tubinoplasty procedures on many patients, to book a consultation, or simply to discuss your situation with one of LLC's medical secretaries, please call Samantha, Trina or Michelle on +44 (0)207 806 4034 or 0845 456 7891.
