Removal of Vascular Lesions

Indications for Removal of Vascular Lesions, Telangiectasias, Prominent facial vessels.

These areas tend to be treated with either no anaesthetic, or anaesthetic cream, rather than injection of local anaesthetic, since the latter tends to make them less prominent, and hence has a negative effect on treatment.

In adults, typical areas to be treated are, spider naevi, small vascular blemishes and thread veins on the face. There is no good evidence to suggest that spider veins on the legs can yet be successfully treated with lasers, although recent data regarding the use of Diode lasers on blue leg veins is highly promising.

Children with vascular growths, such as strawberry naevi, need to be seen at a specialist paediatric laser centre.

Lasers used

  • Copper Vapour
  • Krypton
  • Variable pulse width KTP
  • Flashlamp pumped dye
  • Diode

Most of these laser systems operate in the green/yellow or penetrating spectrum, which is ideal for blood vessels. A successful result often means more than one treatment, except in very small/early cases.

Post Operative Care

Postoperatively there may be some bruising if the lesion was deep, otherwise superficial areas simply undergo a little erythema (redness) for a few hours/days. The treated area should be kept dry and out of direct sunlight for the period in which it is reddened. In our view laser treatment for face veins etc. is not permanent, although treatments at 1year+ intervals tend to keep the condition at bay.
